France will forever be synonymous with wines, given the history and tradition, it's often daunting just trying to work out what to buy, so here's a quick summary to hopefully help you make a decision.
Bordeaux is most famous for grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for reds, and Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion for whites. In general, Bordeaux wines tend to be powerful and strong flavoured. Red wines tend to be red and dark fruits, with herbaceous flavours and strong tannins. White wines tend to be herbaceous,grassy, toasty, and medium to full body. Famous Appellations include Medoc, Pauillac, Margaux, Graves, Pessac Leognan, and Saint Emillion.
Burgundy is famous for its Pinot Noir for reds, and Chardonnay for whites. In general, Burgundy Pinot Noirs are famous for their red fruit profiles balanced with toast and vanilla from oak maturation. Burgundy Chardonnays tend to be fruity with toast honey, and nutty characters, while Chablis Chardonnays tend to be drier and crisp, with more mineral characters. Loire Valley is famous for whites of medium body, with flavours of mineral, herbaceous, leaf/grass, and mature rounded fruits (especially in Sancerre and Pouilly Fume). Grapes include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Melon Blanc.
Finally, Rhone is one of the most underrated wine regions that produces grapes such as Syrah, and Grenache. Flavours include black and red fruits, spices, pepper, chocolate, and liquorice.
