Riesling Eiswein (“ice wine”) is one of nature’s rare gifts. We hold aside certain plots of vines, hoping for a deep enough freeze to harvest frozen grapes. The grapes are picked in the wee hours of the morning and pressed while still frozen, to slowly squeeze out a few drops of precious nectar, leaving the water behind as ice. The result is a vibrant, racy, dessert wine. Winemaker Ernst Loosen is also one of Germany's most respected wine personalities.
Taste: Pure fruit essences of pineapple, peach, fruit cocktail and red berries. It has a full-mouth feel, which is balanced by a long, succulent finish. Pairs well with goose liver pâté with truffles, sharp, rich cheeses (Gorgonzola, Roquefort), apple strudel and crème brûlée. Suggested serving temperature: 46–48°F (8–9°C).
