The year 2006 concluded an exceptional series of five vintages in a row. four of them were marked by heat, which resulted in very ripe grapes at the time of the harvest. this was unprecedented in three centuries of winemaking in champagne and introduced a new challenge, allowing dom pérignon to push its creative process even further.
The years 2002 to 2006 have revealed considerable variations in vintages from “hot” years— ranging from the dark, deep aspects of 2003 or 2005, to the feelings of generosity and light suggested by 2002 or 2006.
More hot than dry, 2006 was almost tropical due to alternating periods of sun and rain. after a late spring, a heatwave in july was followed by a cold and rain-soaked august. the heat came back in september, allowing the grapes to reach a generous ripeness.
On the nose
The remarkable softness of the nose makes an immediate impression, warm and reassuring, subtly nuanced. a floral and mineral tonality quickly opens up to notes of heirloom pêche de vigne peaches, citron, calisson candy and mocha.
On the palate
The elegant fullness on the palate is restrained and tender at the heart. the mouthfeel firms as the complexity grows, thin-skinned and gradually saline. the ensemble ultimately melts into an exquisite bitterness and glorious maturity, with notes of dry fruit, cacao, and grilled hazelnuts.
